Coronavirus exposes cracks in Egypt’s macroeconomic stabilisation. 

The state of Egypt’s security and macroeconomic stabilisation has been further weakened by the global coronavirus pandemic, according to think tank the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI).

The organisation’s August 2020 research paper reported that while the country remains stable on the surface, it continues to have deep structural problems with militarisation of the economy, claims of corruption and a shortfall in remittances from Egyptians working in oil-rich Gulf countries...

Architects of a nation have to lay down solid foundations

South Sudan's fledgling universities need money - and educated young people - to survive. Graham Jarvis reports.

No sooner had the celebrations that followed the Republic of South Sudan's independence from its northern neighbour in July last year died down than the country's fledgling government found itself facing serious challenges, a number of them education-related.

The conflict between north and south has been ongoing since the 1950s. When the south finally achieved its independence from Khartoum on 9 July 2011, many observers felt that the new nation's prospects were promising. South Sudan has agricultural advantages beyond its less fortunate neighbours Ethiopia and Kenya. It also has large reserves of oil, gold and other minerals. Read more here...

Florida ever-blades: state bleeds after deep cuts

Republicans at loggerheads with Democrats and Moody's over retrenchment. Graham Jarvis writes

In common with many US states in recent months, Florida has slashed its higher education budget, cutting $300 million (£191 million) in a bid to help tackle its fiscal deficit.

The move will force Florida's 11 public universities to dig into their reserves, potentially leading them to hike tuition fees by up to 15 per cent and close some academic programmes. Courses in the arts and humanities are the most likely candidates for the chop. Read more...

World Health Organisation Targets Urbanisation

The World Health Organisation (WHO) celebrated World Health Day on 7 April 2010. This year the event, which marked the organisation’s 62nd anniversary, kicked off a year-long campaign to highlight health threats arising from the worldwide trend toward urbanisation.
